Education & Career Development Programs
Members participate in activities that reinforce the skills and knowledge they are learning in school. Programs feature five major components: Homework help and tutoring, high yield learning and leisure activities, parent and adult involvement, collaboration with schools, and incentives and recognition.
Special activities from the Boys and Girls Club’s national program Project Learn, are held on a weekly and/or monthly basis. Project Learn includes high-yield learning activities that will use all learning sources available at the Club.
Power Hour
Power Hour is a free homework help program for all members. A quiet, designated room is provided for members to complete homework assignments. Volunteers and staff are available to assist students with their homework. In addition, books and reading materials are available for members to read while there or take home. Power Hour operates Monday to Thursday from 3:00PM – 5:30PM.

The Lions Club Technology Center
The Club’s technology center is available to Power Hour students daily for homework use and research. The 21st Century Reading program also uses the Tech center for some of its literacy lessons. Special programs in animation, photography and desktop publishing take place throughout the year. Check back often to see current offerings.
The Meriden Library at the Club
Sponsored by the Meriden Rotary Club, the Rotary Satellite Branch of the Meriden Public Library allows members access to the resources of the Meriden Public Library without leaving the Club. Members can take books out and/or use them for help with their homework. The Library’s resources are used daily by the 21st Century Reading Program for reports, leisure reading and literacy improvement. The Meriden Public Library offers special and seasonal programs periodically throughout the year. Check back to see what’s being offered.
21st Century Community Learning Center
The 21st Century Program is designed to improve reading comprehension for John Barry Elementary School students and provide them with a high quality youth enrichment program. Students participate in The Nine Winning Practices Program, Connecticut Children’s Museum (Science Programs), The Princeton Review Program and Smart Moves Program. Members participate in hands on activities, fun interactive reading concepts, get homework assistance, and other high yield learning activities. There is also a parental component to the program. The 21st Century Community Learning Program begins in September and continues for the entire academic year. Transportation is available from John Barry by bus to the Boys and Girls Club of Meriden.

“Be the Change” College Education Program
“Be the Change” helps youth realize their dream of getting a higher education. Through instruction, guest speakers, attending open houses, and campus tours members will get a first hand look at what college is like. They will also create long and short term educational goals with the emphasis on improving their chances of getting into the college of their choice. Participants will receive help with high school course selection, filling out college applications, resume writing, applying for financial aid and much more. “Be the Change” meets twice a week on Tuesdays at 6:00 - 8:00p.m. On Saturdays 9:00 - 12:00p.m. during the school year.

Orchid Society
Orchid Society serves as an extension to SMART Girls: Teen Smmit for Girls. The program is designed to further empower our female members by developing the necessary skills to pursue educational, career and personal goals in a professional manner. Through special speakers and some trips our members will be given the opportunity to explore and ask questions about careers to help them develop a plan for their future. This is a great opportunity to learn from working professionals and get a first hand feel for some of the amazing opportunities available to women. The program is offered on Fridays from 5PM to 6PM.

Dunkin Donuts Junior Staff
The Dunkin Donuts Junior Staff program is available to club members age 13 to 18. Members interested in becoming Junior Staff must complete an
application and be interviewed. The goal of this program is to offer job experience to prepare members for future employment. Junior Staff assist at the front desk, game room, sporting events and other special program areas as needed. They also manage and work in the Snack Bar. Junior Staff have weekly staff meetings where they have lessons on job skills. In addition to job skill development members are also taught money management. Upon completion of the program members are given assistance getting a job.

Money Matters
Money Matters is a program designed for all ages. Members learn about all aspects of money including; checking accounts, saving accounts, debit/ credit cards, understanding a pay check and much more. This program is used in many of our existing programs such as College Education, Junior Staff, 21st Century and Keystone Club.
